Description

Stilt fishing, also known as Ritipenna in Sinhalese, has been a traditional fishing practice found among the fishing communities in the Southern Coast of Sri Lanka. The fishermen sit on a cross bar called a petta tied to a vertical pole and driven into the sand a few meters offshore. Stilt fishing season is at its peak during the southwest monsoon because fishermen using boats also end up on stilts since the sea is too rough.
